Ralph has been a friend of our family for almost fifty years. I first met him when I was an engineer for the Yanhee Electricity Authority (YEA, which later became EGAT, the Electric Generating Authority of Thailand), which was responsible for operating a large hydro electric dam located about five hundred kilometers north of Bangkok. Ralph was the project engi-neer responsible for the lines and station that brought power from the dam to Bangkok with several intermediate substations along the way. My first impression was that of a handsome, tall American full of confidence. But I wondered how he would last in the harsh environment where he had to work. I found out very soon that he enjoyed our culture, our people, and especially our spicy Thai food.
It seems that from the very beginning that Ralph had a desire to help the younger genera-tion on their path to being better citizens of the world. He has been a guardian for many young Thai students by helping them find universi-ties that specialize in their fields of interest. In addition, he gave them training at his company during their school breaks. It is worth noting that all the students under his care came back to Thailand and as of this day hold good posi-tions in virtually every profession in Thailand.
For example, my own son, Poon, was under Ralph and his late wife Charlotte’s guardian-ship from high school to a master’s degree in business administration. Today he is executive vice president of one of the largest banks in Thailand. Poon loved Charlotte so much that he made two trips with his family to her home in Kentucky during her illness. Likewise, all the families that Ralph and Charlotte have helped with furthering the education of their children are grateful and thankful. We dedicate this verse to you Ralph Young:
There are things that cannot be bought with silver and gold,
As thoughtfulness and kindness and love are never sold.
There are priceless things in life for which no one can pay.
And the giver finds rich recompense in giving them away.
You will love reading the life story of D. Ralph Young.
